The Beauty of Nepal Idol Revealed

Reality shows especially singing competitions are my favorite ones. I remember the times of Indian Idol, the level of excitement used to be too damn high. Now, that the ‘Idol Franchise’ has come in our country, Nepal Idol has become the top show to not miss. I have been following it since day one.

But, the reason behind me writing about it today in my blog is that the latest episode which was aired on 27th July was amazingly brilliant. It was named as ‘Lok Geet Special’ episode and it has successfully proved that ‘Nepal Idol is more than just a singing competition’.

Yes! Nepal Idol is not only a singing competition. Moreover, it’s also about preserving our native cultural music. The exhibition of the different kinds of local folk songs from Mechi to Mahakali or from East to Far West was so beautiful in this last episode. It definitely did justice in defining ‘Nepal as a multilingual and multicultural country’. And I felt like the search of ‘Pratistha ko pahilo aawaj’ is absolutely going in the right direction. The one who will win the show shouldn’t be the one with only amazing voice, personality, and versatility. In addition, s/he should know the folk, cultural or traditional songs/music well from each and every corner of our country.

The legendary singers reminded

The Top 9 contestants of Nepal Idol came up with the folk songs from every part of the country like Deuda, Salaijo, Purbeli bhaka, Lok dohori and others. They reminded us about some legendary singers/musicians like Khemraj Gurung, Jhalak Man Gandarbha, Aruna Lama, Sanjeevani, Ciney Gurung and others.

Among these, the best performance of the day for me was Suraj Thapa’s one who sang Jhalak Man Gandarbha’s ‘aamaile sodhlin’ in such a heart touching style. The song reflects the general reality of Nepal from 90’s years (a man dies in foreign land at war time). Mr. Thapa’s performance made the judges cry literally. Plus, it took every viewer deep down to the emotions of the lyrics. The so-called modern youths may not get this song but whatever it was a soulful performance.

Lastly, I strongly hope to see such great performance in coming days. The ‘Voice of Nepal’ will be a deserving one I believe. Thanks to Nepal Idol and AP1TV for bringing up such a great franchise to Nepal.
