Kanyam, a small town located in Illam district of eastern Nepal is one of the top tourist destinations hands down. Specifically, the enticing Kanyam tea estate was in my bucket list since a long time. And I am elated to have been able to take it out of the list.
So, my totally unplanned trip to Kanyam tea estate started from Jhapa, the bordering district of Illam. I have always been fascinated by the Terai plains. The straight roads laying down that we can see till our eyes reach, fields decorated with greenery all around and the geographical structure it has got amaze me every time. When I reached there, I indeed was excited a lot. But then, the scalding climate was literally hitting me hard. Seeing me sweating continuously and struggling to endure the hot climate, my friend took me out for a ride. Then, I had some chilling time at Barme tea estate at Budhabare, Jhapa before I could experience the extreme joy at the heart of Illam; Kanyam tea estate.
Before jumping towards the Kanyam Tea Estate, I would love to show you some of the photographs I took at the Barne Tea Estate which is claimed to be the largest tea estate in Nepal.
Barne Tea Estate, Jhapa
Kanyam Tea Estate sits at the extreme height of Illam district; 6,000 ft.above sea level. With an uphill ride for around half an hour from Jhapa through the thick and thin forest and attracting views, one can reach the tea estate. I was fascinated by the ride I had till Kanyam as much as I was by the tea garden. The abrupt transition of the geographical structure while traveling from Jhapa to Illam astonished me indeed. While you are being burnt at the Terai lands, the cool breeze striking your face in the hilly region just makes you feel too relieved. I felt the same.
The hilly and sloppy roads with the green forests and fields around leads you to one of the famous tourism districts of Nepal; Illam. The vibes you get once you cross the Illam border just makes you feel so wonderful. Through the same kind of roads and moist weather, you can reach to the Kanyam Tea Estate, which you will come to know about with the alluring greenery around. The green tea garden and the plants with the cotton clouds floating over it literally make the trip worthy enough.
As soon as I reached there, I was dumbstruck with the beauty it has got. I literally felt like, “Yes! it is the same place I used to see on web. I am finally here.”
The climate there changed quite unexpectedly all of a sudden. As I was wondered because of the same; some local people said, “You can never trust the climate here. It is just too wild. At one moment, you will have the burning sun rays hitting you hard or clear views around while at another, you will have the cold wind or fog or the heavy rainfall ruining your day. See, it was hot few minutes ago; now, it’s raining like hell, and you cannot expect what will it be like after few moments. You might feel too odd but we are habituated with this.”
A small and sweet place I got to visit after the trip to Kanyam.
